Nirvan Shah

Introduction

Hi! I’m Nirvan Shah.

Welcome to my corner of the internet.

I’m a Purdue student from the Bay Area, California. Here you’ll find a little about me, the things I’m working on, and what I enjoy outside of school.

About Me

I’m a big Golden State Warriors fan, a Funko Pop collector, and someone who almost always has Bay Area rap in the rotation. I’ve built a Funko Pop collection worth over $2,400, and it’s one of my favorite things to show people.

Outside of that, I love playing lacrosse, basketball, and water polo.

Lacrosse, one of the sports I love playing.

Prescription Eyewear with Detachable Module

Status
Provisional Patent (provisional patent application filed)
Type
Independent project
Timeline
–
Simple isometric CAD sketch showing the core design of my patented eyewear concept and its detachable lowlight visibility module.

The problem

My grandma had a hard time seeing, and that inspired this invention. I wanted to help people see more clearly in low-light conditions and stay safer at night.

The invention

Multifunctional prescription eyewear that integrates 2 sliding, detachable, rechargeable LED modules for better visibility in low light and added nighttime safety.

What I did

I invented the eyewear and developed 4+ detailed CAD sketches across 4 design iterations. I prototyped 3 modular lighting attachments with USB-C charging and balanced them for comfortable daily wear, then filed a provisional patent application.

Concept drawing created using Onshape’s drawing tools.

Wheelchair Water Bottle Holder

I designed and 3D printed 4+ prototypes of an ergonomic water bottle holder with an adjustable clamp, testing different shapes so it could fit multiple wheelchair frames and bottle sizes. Over 10+ fit and usability tests, I refined the clamp, bottle access, and stability to make it more secure and easier to use for elderly wheelchair users.

Experience and Involvement

  1. Mechanical Engineering Intern

    Mattson Technology

    • Designed an adjustable clamp prototype in SolidWorks with a 25 mm adjustment range that fits 3 heater sizes, for repeatable friction testing between heater and wafer surfaces.
    • Built a piecewise mathematical model of a CAM profile across 6 motion intervals, calculating position and velocity through a full 360° cycle to support mechanism analysis and robotic movement.
    • Built and iterated 3 prototypes of a custom retainer system with 8 aligned grooves and dual side support beams, making a helical coil more stable during handling and transport.
  2. Engineering Research Student

    COSMOS, UC San Diego

    • Led CAD and structural design of a 2-foot wind turbine prototype, working through 5+ design configurations and physical load testing.
    • Researched ethics in structural and mechanical engineering through real-world failures and design decisions, and earned 1st place among 300+ COSMOS students for that research.
  3. Manufacturing Team Sublead

    FIRST Robotics, Saratoga High School

    • Managed a 10+ member manufacturing subteam on an award-winning FRC team, designing, machining, and assembling 30+ custom components.
    • Streamlined an 8-week competition build schedule and trained 15+ new members on Onshape, CNC operation, and machining.
    • Contributed to robot design and manufacturing across 3 FRC World Championship appearances and 6 regional engineering awards.

About $14,000
A few of the jerseys from my resale business.

I built and managed a sports jersey resale business, generating approximately $14,000 in revenue through product sourcing, pricing research, online listings, customer communication, and order fulfillment. I tracked market demand across teams and players to identify profitable inventory and deliver reliable service to buyers.
